Copper Star Alpaca Farm was founded in 2007 when, while visiting at a friends house, I came across a picture of an alpaca on the cover of a magazine. We were at a point in our lives where we were considering possibilities to utilize our property, and enrich our lives in our beautiful Columbia County, New York setting. The added benefit of possibly earning an income from harvesting the soft, warm and durable fleece produced by these sweet and gentle creatures, was intriguing. A unique and exciting path was paved. We purchased our first six alpacas in November 2007. The following year was spent clearing property, erecting barns and fencing. Finally we were able to move our small herd of six females to our farm in December 2008.
In 2011, we opened our ‘farm store off the farm’ on Main Street in the charming town of Millerton, New York. Millerton is a favorite stop for weekenders from Long Island, Manhattan, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey. And, vacationers come from far and wide to enjoy the shops and charm of our town. Our little store is now known as a “destination stop” for alpaca apparel, accessories, home decor and unique gifts ideas. We have the distinction of being one of the very few farms whose alpaca apparel store is actually in town and not on the farm. We also bring our alpacas into the store to the delight of everyone, young and old. Most are amazed at how gentle and wonderful they are with people. Alpacas bring smiles to everyone, from toddlers to seniors. While these truly wonderful animals are such a joy, they are also producing a profitable, usable, and renewable commodity. Because of this shared experience, often therapeutic, Copper Star Alpacas is now sponsoring a nursing home program where we bring our alpacas into nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospitals. There is no better way to “give back”.
Our farm now has over 125 alpacas, in every one of the 22 recognized colors in the United States. We are now the largest alpaca farm in Columbia County. Many award winning champions reside here producing the next generation of elite fiber alpacas. We love our daily interactions with our herd, and enjoy attending Alpaca Shows throughout the country.
Previous to our becoming involved with the alpacas, we had a small flock of chickens. In 2010, we added dairy goats to accommodate my soap making passion, angora goats for their beautiful fiber which we blend with our alpaca fiber for extrodinary yarn. Later we added pigs, turkeys, guinea hens and pot belly pigs. Of course, we had the usual variety of household pets including two chocolate labradors, five beagles, a pekingese and five barn cats. Oh well this certainly makes for an interesting mix of joy and chaos.
We are 100% invested and dedicated in the growth and future development of the U.S. alpaca industry. We will continue to breed for the best possible animals for product, for show, for future breeding stock, and the shear pleasure of enjoying these glorious animals.
We place great emphasis on the quality and well-being of all our livestock. We provide them with the best care and quality food, in a clean and nurturing environment. Each of of our alpacas receives very individualized attention. Our alpaca herd covers a range of colors from white to black, rose grey to dark silver grey, and all shades in between. Last but not least, our alpaca herd boasts some of the industries most sort after, award winning, champion producing, proven genetics.
Alpacas have become more than just an investment in our financial future. For us, they are also an investment in a wonderfully peaceful and calm quality of life. We love the alpaca lifestyle, and what these amazing creatures have added to our life. Not only are they a welcome source of income… they are magically therapeutic. As we watch them graze, pronk and play, we can feel the stress of every day life diminish.
